Hutchinson and Buchanan supports Yorkshire Air Ambulance
An organisation close to our hearts is the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. They’re an independent charity that receives no direct government funding. Instead, they rely on the generosity of people like you and us to help save lives 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Every donation they receive goes toward life saving rapid response emergency services to 5 million people. Their crews are kept busy responding to around 1,700 incidents every year. That’s five missions every day across Yorkshire.
Helping save lives
When your life plans hit a rough patch, we want to help get you back on track as soon as possible.
Thanks to their supporters and amazing team, people who need urgent medical attention have a much higher chance of survival and recovery.
Yorkshire Air Ambulance have plans to improve their service by expanding their fleet to include a 3rd helicopter. This will act as a cover for when one of their two helicopters are down for maintenance. They’re also expanding their operational availability by employing their own technical crew members.
Whenever someone comes to see us at our law offices in North Street, Ripon, about witnessing or notarising a document, we charge a nominal minimum fee (starting at £10 but more if you like).
We put these fees straight into our Yorkshire Air Ambulance donation jar. As soon as it needs emptying, we write a cheque and fire it off to Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
In 2023, we raised them a total of £1,028.25, and we’re always keen to beat that figure each year. So if you need any documents witnessed by a solicitor, and you want to support a great cause, come and see us to make a difference.

Can you get a Stamp Duty refund?
In certain circumstances, yes.
For example, if you purchase a new home before selling your existing main residence, you may initially have to pay the higher rate for additional properties.
If you then sell your previous main home within three years, you may be able to reclaim the 3% surcharge.
Refund applications can be submitted through the government’s official website.
Can Stamp Duty be reduced?
While Stamp Duty cannot usually be avoided entirely, there may be legitimate ways to reduce the amount payable.
This includes:
- Negotiating a lower purchase price
- Separating the value of removable fixtures and fittings from the property price
- Ensuring you claim any available reliefs, such as first-time buyer relief.
We can help ensure that the correct SDLT amount is calculated and that you do not pay more tax than necessary.
