Hutchinson and Buchanan Solicitors have been established in Ripon since 1919 and we have been based at our offices at North Street throughout our 90 year history. We continue a legal practice whose origins can be traced back to the eighteenth century. Many of our solicitors come from families who have been practising as solicitors with us for several generations. We take pride in these community and family traditions.
Our large and varied client base comes from urban and rural areas of North Yorkshire and beyond. We offer an unparalleled knowledge and understanding of North Yorkshire and its people.
A considerable proportion of our clients were referred to us by existing clients. Many have become personal friends over the years and remain with us even if they have moved out of the local area.
Our solicitors offer a broad range of quality and professional legal services based on the very best standards of legal expertise and business practice. We promote the best interests of our clients in every case, whether large or small. We provide advice that is approachable, constructive and comprehensive yet also good value for money. Our legal services are individual to you and your needs.
Our solicitors include members of the Law Society’s Family Panel and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. We are also supported by modern information technology and one of the largest legal libraries in the area.
If you are unwell and unable to come to our offices, we can make arrangements to visit you at home.
Conversion to LLP
With effect from 1st October 2013, Hutchinson & Buchanan has converted to a Limited Liability Partnership registered in England and Wales with company number OC383756 and with the name ‘Hutchinson & Buchanan LLP’ (“the LLP”). We shall continue to use ‘Hutchinson & Buchanan Solicitors’ as our trading name
As part of the conversion the traditional partnership of Hutchinson & Buchanan (“the Partnership”) transferred to the LLP, its business and assets and the LLP assumed certain liabilities and commitments of the Partnership. The transfer included client engagements, records and confidential or privileged information.
In practical terms it will be very much business as usual. The change will not affect the services we provide and the same team will continue to provide their services to you as before. We will continue to use the word ‘Partner’ to refer to a Member of the LLP.
Reasons for Change
An LLP structure is the preferred corporate structure for professional services firms and a very significant number of UK law firms have converted in recent years. We believe it is right for us to also convert to this structure, to provide the firm with a transparent and modern business platform for the future.
The LLP is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority with SRA Number 597775. Our change in status does not affect our professional indemnity insurance in any way, and the LLP holds the same level of cover as the partnership. All money held by the Partnership on behalf of clients was transferred to the control of the LLP on 1st October 2013.
New Terms of Business apply to all new work which the LLP is instructed to carry out, on or after 1st October 2013. Existing Terms of Business which have been agreed with the Partnership in relation to; our role, the services you have asked us to provide, the team working for you, costs and timescales (or any other terms which have not been superseded by the new terms) will continue to operate as set out in your original client care letter with the Partnership, but will now be under the terms of your contract with Hutchinson & Buchanan LLP. For the avoidance of doubt, all aspects of your relationship going forward are now with the LLP. New Terms of Business will be issued in due course if you have not already received a copy. If you do have any queries or questions concerning the above please do not hesitate to speak to your usual contact.
